As a software engineer, when you think of interviewing, you probably only conjure up images of solving technical coding problems on a whiteboard. Turns out, there’s a lot more to interviewing than your technical skills alone. Behavioral and cultural interviews are now an essential part of your hireability as a candidate.

Today, I'd like to share with you a free course, Grokking the Behavioral Interview.

You may be thinking something along the lines of, "is it even possible to prepare for a Behavioral interview?" The short answer is: yes. Yes it is.

Even if you’re already pretty confident in your ability to talk about yourself and your accomplishments, you have a lot to gain from practicing and reminding yourself of some of the more common pitfalls.

I’ve interviewed hundreds of candidates throughout my career, and you’d be surprised at how many people do a good job on the whiteboard interviews but fail at behavioral interviews. This is the one that many think doesn’t matter as much. The fact is it’s often the interview that matters the most.

Take Amazon as an example. Culture is so deeply rooted in their hiring process that they have someone known as a "Bar Raiser" (someone who lives and breathes Amazon culture) give the final say over you getting hired.

From my experience, it’s best to prepare for the behavioral interview just as you prepare for coding questions. But what exactly does preparation look like, what should you focus on, what does a "good" answer look like? This course will help answer these questions.

While it’s aimed at people in technical roles, this course is good content for anyone, in any profession.

You’ll learn how to effectively prepare and respond to behavioral interview questions. You’ll go over:

  • How to frame your answers using the famous STAR technique
  • Common patterns, myths, and truths around behavioral interview questions
  • Best practices for etiquette, whether in-person or over the phone
